In 1962, the establishment of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics by the famous scientist Yolkin Kholmatovich Torakulov was the first step towards the development of biophysics in our country. In 1962, Bekjon Oybekovich Toshmukhamedov was appointed to the position of a junior researcher at the department of biophysics of Tosh State University, and later in 1963, he was appointed to the position of associate professor. The creation of the School of Biophysics in Uzbekistan is directly related to its name. In 1979, the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics was divided into two independent departments: Biochemistry and Biophysics and Environmental Protection. In 1988, a separate Department of Biotechnology and Cell Biology was established on the basis of the biotechnology group of the Department of Biophysics, and Professor M.M. Rakhimov led. Later, the Department of Biophysics and Environmental Protection was renamed the Department of Biophysics.
From the time the department was established until 1986, it was headed by a professor, and later by an academician of the Faculty of Arts of the Republic of Uzbekistan B.O. Tashmukhamedov led. It should be noted that B.O. Tashmukhamedov is a principled and talented researcher with encyclopedic knowledge. He was a knowledgeable organizer and scientist of popularization of science, and his scientific activities were continued by his mature students. In 1985-2001, the department was headed by B.O. Toshmuhamedov’s student, a well-known expert in the field of bioenergetics and ion transport, professor A.I. Gagelgans led. In 2001-2005, the Department of Biophysics was headed by Professor M.V. Zamaraeva, in 2005-2008 b.f.d. professor R.Z. Sabirov, in 2008-2013 B.Sc., Associate Professor V.B. Yu.V. Leviskaya, PhD in 2013-2018, associate professor G.G. Radjabova, in 2018-2019 it was managed by Professor U.Z. Mirkhodzhaev. From December 2020 to the Department of Biophysics b.f.f.d. (PhD) Kh.S. Roziboev is in charge.
More than 20 doctors of science at the Department of Biophysics: Z.U. Bekmukhametova, A.K. Kasimov, A.I. Gagelgans, P.B. Usmanov, N.M. Mirsalikhova, M.Kh. Gaynutdinov, M.U. Toychiboev, R.N. Akhmerov, O.V. Krasilnikov, U.Z. Mirkhodjaev, R.Z. Sabirov, D. Kalikulov, E.M. Makhmudova, I.G. Akhmedjanov, B.U. Atakoziev, M.I. Asrorov, Z.Z. Gizzatulina and others, as well as about 50 candidates of science.
Cooperation and mutual scientific relations have been established with graduates of different years of the department working in scientific centers of a number of foreign countries.
The scientific direction of the department is called “Study of ionic mechanisms of action of membrane-active compounds”, and scientific research works are being carried out on the basis of this topic.
