The Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology was established in 1938 by Academician I.A. Raykova as the Department of “Underground Plants” at Tashkent State University. Since 1940, prof. P. Golovin was in charge and trained personnel in the field of Mycology.
In 1956, associate professor O.G.Yolkina opened the Department of Microbiology at the department, and personnel were trained in this department: K.Yu.Musayev, F.G.Akhmedova, Ya.F.Nizametdinova, M.L.Mansurova, A.M.Muzafarov, E.V.Kondratyeva, Sh.Tozhiboyev, K. I. Ibodov.
Since 1990, the Department of Microbiology has been headed by prof. A.Kh.Vahabov was in charge. In 1989, Prof. M.M. Rakhimov established the Department of Biotechnology and personnel are being trained in this field. In 2005, the Departments of Microbiology and Biotechnology were united and the head of the department was prof. M.M. Rakhimov was appointed.
In 70 years, the Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology was established not only for Uzbekistan, but also for Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, as well as the Russian Federation, China, Norway, Korea, Egypt, Iraq, Cuba, Germany, and the USA. has trained highly qualified personnel in Microbiology and Biotechnology. Professors and teachers of the Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology are sent to prestigious universities of several foreign countries to improve their qualifications.
Major scientists, doctors of science, professors, academicians who develop the field of microbiology and biotechnology in Uzbekistan and abroad are former students of the Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology. Among the graduates of the Department of “Microbiology and Biotechnology” are state and public figures, deputies of the Oliy Majlis, heads of scientific institutions of our country, mature scientists. Minister of Innovative Development of the Republic of Uzbekistan I.Yu. Abdurahmanov and his deputy Sh.U. Turdigulova, Rector of Ajou University in Tashkent G.A. The Muratovs are also graduates of the department. In addition, graduates of the department are currently working at the universities of California and New York, the Russian Agrarian University, and the Pedagogical Institutes of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In the department, undergraduate students are taught general subjects such as terrestrial plants, microbiology and virology, biotechnology and medical microbiology.
The department has master’s degrees in Microbiology and Virology and Biotechnology.
The subjects of molecular microbiology, industrial microbiology, molecular biology of viruses, fungal biology, systematics and cytology of microorganisms, soil microbiology, applied mycology and plant viral diseases are taught to the master’s students in the field of microbiology and virology.
Biotechnology majors are taught Molecular biotechnology, Applied enzymology, Biotechnology of biologically active and medicinal substances, Basics of biological specificity, Biotechnology and ecological problems, Immunobiotechnology, Nanobiotechnology, Affine chromatography.
Today, the Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology cooperates with the Institute of Microbiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics, the Institute of Plant Chemistry, the Institute of Genetics and Plant Experimental Biology.
Currently, the talented research scientists of the scientific schools that created Vakhabov Abdurasul Khakimovich and Mirzaatxam Mirzakhakimovich Rakhimov are leading the microbiology, virology and biotechnology scientists of Uzbekistan and are passing on their knowledge and experience to their students.
From 2021 to the Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology Doctor of Biological Sciences, prof. Normurodova Kunduz Togayevna is in charge. 2019 Q.T. Normurodova prof. Under the supervision of G. A. Muratov, he successfully defended his Doctor of Biological Sciences (DSc.) dissertation on the topic “Improving the biotechnology of ethanol extraction from starch-containing raw materials”. As a result of Q. T. Normurodova’s scientific research, more than 75 scientific works, including 45 scientific articles were published in the republic’s prestigious journals, more than 30 theses and articles were published at international and national scientific conferences.
