The department of “Legal Sciences” has been named differently in the years of independence based on changes and optimizations in the education system. In particular, in order to fully teach the contents of the reforms implemented in Uzbekistan, Laws of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Decrees, Resolutions and decisions of the Cabinet of Ministers and other adopted regulatory legal documents, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated 11.2016 In May, according to the Decision No. PQ-2527 “On measures to further improve the activities of the National University of Uzbekistan”, changes were made to the structures of the National University of Uzbekistan, and the department was named “Theory and Practice of Democratic State Building”. On June 27, 2012, the “National idea and legal education” department of the scientific council of the National University of Uzbekistan named after Mirzo Ulugbek, “National idea, foundations of spirituality and legal education”, which was previously in the Faculty of Philosophy was established on the basis of the decision “to transfer the department to the Faculty of Law”.
From May 12, 2014, based on the order of the rector of UzMU, the department “Social philosophy” and “National idea and legal education” departments of the Faculty of Philosophy were merged and named “National idea and social philosophy”. According to the order of April 4, 2016, the department was named “National idea”. Based on the order of the Rector of the University No. 01-811 dated October 4, 2019, as a result of the merger of the “Theory and Practice of Democratic State Building” and “National Idea” departments, the department was named the “Civil Society and Legal Education” department. By order of the university rector No. 01-285 of September 4, 2023, the “Civil Society and Legal Education” department was divided into the “Political Science” and “Legal Sciences” departments. Currently, the department is headed by Sh. Saidov (PhD) in legal sciences.

Babak Rezvani is a professor of political sciences at the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands) 18.12.2020. Based on the order #02-1710, in March 2020-2021, he gave online lectures on the subjects “Basics of Globalization” and “Geopolitical Processes in Central Asia” at the master’s level of 5A111601-Methodology of Teaching Social Humanities.
